Caravan and classic camper restoration

Classic caravans and campers are increasingly popular, but they rot and leak in ways that are easy to miss until the damage is serious.

Shell and chassis. Check the frame, chassis, floor and corner steadies for corrosion. Many older vans have steel or aluminium frames and timber floors that rot where water gets in. Lift the carpets and linings and inspect properly.

Body panels and seams. Reseal every window, door, roof vent, seam and trim. Modern sealants are excellent, but only if the surfaces are clean and sound. Do not rely on silicone on a caravan — it is not durable enough.

Gas, water and electrics. Replace the gas regulator, hoses and any old copper pipe. Rebuild the water pump and tank. Fit a modern consumer unit with RCD and MCB protection if the original electrics are outdated.

Interior and insulation. Remove damp wall boards, renew insulation and reline with a breathable material. Rebuild the seating, cushions and curtains to suit how you will use the van.

Running gear. Service the brakes, bearings, tyres, jockey wheel and coupling. Trailer tyres age out even with low mileage, so replace anything with perished rubber or sidewall cracking.
