Moped and lightweight classic bike restoration

Mopeds and lightweight classics are an excellent entry point into restoration. They are simple, parts are often available, and they take up little space.

Frame and cycle parts. Check the simple pressed-steel or tubular frame for cracks and rust. Wheels are often small, so true them carefully and replace bearings, spokes and tyres as needed.

Two-stroke engines. Most mopeds use two-stroke engines. Replace piston, rings, crank seals and bearings as a set. Check the cylinder for scoring and measure the bore before buying parts.

Carburettor and exhaust. Strip and clean the carb thoroughly, paying attention to the jetting and the slide. Two-strokes are sensitive to exhaust restriction, so replace a dented or blocked pipe.

Transmission and pedals. Auto-clutch variators, chains and pedals need cleaning and lubrication. Replace the drive chain and adjust the tension correctly.

Lights, horn and brakes. Small bikes have minimal electrics, often powered by a magneto. Make sure the lights, brake light and horn work properly — they are part of the road-going requirements.
