Paperwork, V5C and getting back on the road

Keep the vehicle identity intact. A restoration that keeps the original chassis or monocoque, plus at least two other major original components, normally retains its registration.

Keep a file with:

- The V5C, and any old buff logbook or heritage certificate. - Dated photographs of every stage — proof of originality and hugely valuable at sale. - Every invoice from every specialist. - Weights, part numbers and specification for the MOT and insurance valuation.

Vehicles over forty years old are generally exempt from MOT and road tax in the UK, but you must still declare and keep them roadworthy. An agreed-value classic policy needs photographs and a receipt file — another reason to document as you go.
