Stationary engines, steam and fairground restoration

Stationary engines, steam boilers and fairground equipment are rewarding but come with serious safety responsibilities. The finish matters, but mechanical integrity matters more.

Boiler and pressure work. Any pressure vessel must be inspected by a competent person. Do not attempt to repair a boiler shell, firebox, tubes or fittings without the correct certification and test regime. This is not negotiable.

Mechanicals and lubrication. Strip the engine, check the crankshaft, bearings, pistons, rings and valve gear. Rebuild the oiling system with clean pipes and correct grade oil. Replace or restore the governor so it actually limits speed.

Fuel and ignition. Clean the fuel tank, lines, filter and carburettor. Convert to electric ignition if originality allows, but keep the mechanical advance and timing correct. Steam burners need clean atomisers and proper draught.

Frames, trucks and trailers. Fairground engines and showmen's tractors have living history parts. Check the road-going chassis, brakes, tyres and lighting if you plan to move them on the road.

Documentation. Keep records of boiler tests, material certificates, modifications and photographs. Future owners and inspectors will need them, and they protect the value of the machine.
